Introducing Pam Petty
Hello,
My name is Pam Petty and my name will be on the November General Election ballot for the Maricopa County Community College Governing Board for District #3. This district includes much of east and north central Phoenix, Paradise Valley, and parts of Scottsdale and Tempe. Take a look at the District #3 map to see if you live in my district and can vote for me.
This election is important to you!
The November election is exceptionally important for the future of our college district. The Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) is the second largest community college district in the country with ten colleges, two skills centers and a number of satellite campuses that serve almost 250,000 students. Five Governing Board members determine policy for this vast district and its thousands of students. The MCCCD Governing Board must insure excellent educational opportunities for all students and communities while being responsive to the residents and taxpayers of Maricopa County. I am qualified to serve on the Governing Board and I will work for you.
My Qualifications
I’ve dedicated my entire professional life to education, and I hope to continue that dedication by moving from teaching to public service. I recently retired as a history professor at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Before that I taught high school in the Glendale Union High School District. In addition to teaching I’ve served in leadership positions in both districts, most recently as Chair of the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Chandler-Gilbert. The PAC of the Maricopa County Community Colleges Faculty Association has endorsed my candidacy.
I Will Work for You
I offer experienced leadership and educational expertise, a commitment to transparency, stewardship and accountability, and a dedication to student success. I promise to work for fiscal responsibility and the highest quality education at the lowest possible price. I support the district mission of meeting the life-long learning needs of our diverse students. I promise a continued dedication to academic innovation and academic freedom. I will work to expand the public’s knowledge of the excellence and success of both the university transfer and the work force development students.
My Background
I will work hard to represent you on the MCCCD Governing Board. I am a third generation Arizonan with strong ties to North Phoenix. I graduated from Sunnyslope High School and moved back into the district sixteen years ago. I have long-time family connections to the Maricopa College District. My mother graduated from Phoenix College in 1935 and my uncle, Robert Jaap, served as president of the first Maricopa Community College District Governing Board beginning in 1962.
While I’ve taken classes at both Phoenix College and Glendale Community College, my academic degrees are from all three of the state’s universities. They include a Bachelor’s in History from the University of Arizona, a Master’s in History from Arizona State University, and a Doctor of Education from Northern Arizona University in Educational Leadership.
I have always been committed to student success and to excellent and innovative teaching. I was an Arizona recipient of the National Endowment for the Humanities/ DeWitt Wallace Teacher-Scholar Award for outstanding teaching and scholarship. I served as the Chairperson of the Committee on Teaching for the Organization of American Historians and have served on the boards for the Coordinating Committee for History in Arizona and for National History Day in Arizona. I have presented frequently at professional meetings and have taught future teachers at Arizona State University.
